Notes:

I was inspired to translate this song after a long conversation about Tibetan music with an Ani. Lamenting the days when Tibetan songs all had deep, profound lyrics, she remarked how the majority of modern songs make use of very superficial lyrics. I agreed but then showed her a few modern songs with very beautiful lyrics, restoring her faith in Tibetan music. This translation is a tribute to that conversation as it is the classical “I’m a boy, you’re a girl, you look nice, and so…” Not to demean the song or singer in anyway (Tashi indeed has lots of great songs!) it is certainly a very catchy and pleasant modern song. Please enjoy!

Note: This may be one of my favorite Tibetan songs of all time. Not only is the music energetic, lively, catchy, and well executed, but the content of the song and its overall euphoric tone impresses me every time. I would be very surprised to find a song in the West which is this celebratory of abstinence. Just watch the singer's performance, the smile on his face and just how into it he appears--it's a rare piece, to say the least. That being said, there is one line in here that I've never been quite sure how to translate: མི་ཡི་མཐའ་མ་བསམ་པའི་འཁྱམ་པོ་ངས༎ (mi yi tha ma sam pay khyam po ngey). I even had a Tibetan friend explain it to me a while ago, and even though I remember the gist of what he said I don't recall exactly how he phrased it. The latter half of the line is quite clear, where he says "I, the vagabond..."; it is the first half I find problematic. "Mi yi tha ma" means something like "the last person" or "the last of humanity" perhaps. I recall my friend telling me that this was a pejorative statement, and means something more like "the worst person". Combining this with the term "sam pa" which has a wide range of meanings--sometimes meaning "thought" or "thinking"--but here I am translating as "intention". Thus, I am going with the phrase "the one who has the worst intentions". I cannot say that is a precise translation, but it at least captures the meaning. Anyhow, it's very clear that this sentence is meant to be humilific and emphasize the speaker's own weakness, and therefore it should not be a cause of major concern. Just enjoy the song and try to imagine yourself being this ecstatic about giving up one of your vices--in front of your root lama that is!

Note: Just a couple of things to mention here for this tune. The main theme of this song is obviously བཀྲ་ཤིས་ "tashi", which some of you may recognize from the Tibetan greeting བཀྲ་ཤིས་ "Tashi delek"; I have here translated it as "good fortune", but it is usually translated as "auspiciousness". The only issue this created was with the line ལས་རླུང་རྟ་དར་བའི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཤོག། where the phrase རླུང་རྟ་ "lung ta" (lit. "Wind horse") refers to "good fortune" or "good luck". So I decided to translate it as "positive circumstances" since the phrase was also accompanied by the term ལས་ "ley" for karma (probably positive karma in this sense); I felt this avoided the reduncancy that translating it otherwise would have probably created. Another interesting thing to note is the term འབྲི་ "dri" which is a female yak, but I have translated here as just plain old "yak", which of course refers to a male yak in Tibetan; since a yak is a yak in English I have no choice but to translate it as such--translating it as "female yak" would also sound too awkward in the translation. So just don't ever tell a Tibetan that you want to milk a yak! One more very interesting and important phrase is གོང་ས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་བླ་མ་ "kongsa kyab gön lama", which is an epithet for H.H. the Dalai Lama, kongsa refers to the fact that he resides on the higher (kong) bodhisattva bhumis (sa); kyabgön means refuge (kyab) and protector (gön); and of course we all know that lama refers to a spiritual master, the equivalent of the sanskrit term guru. Of course it would be an amazing feat to work that into the actual translation, but at least knowing that that is what they are saying is sufficient (the Tibetan names for His Holiness are, in my opinion, very beautiful and profound and I wish we would adopt/adapt some of them for us Western Buddhists). It's also important to note that as this song/video seems to have been produced in Tibet/China, the Chinese government knows what this term refers too and so these too are likely in prison or at a re-education camp for mentioning it. I've even read that the simple term ཆོལ་གསུམ "chöl sum" ("Three provinces"; referring to Utsang, Kham, and Amdo and also used in this song) is a politically sensitive word and the Chinese government does not appreciate its use. This is why I have such great admiration for Tibetan singers, because they risk so much just to express their loyalty and love for their own country, people, and faith, and even so much as wishing good fortune for these things could place them in detention for who knows how long.

Notes:

What more could you ask for in a Tibetan song than a beautiful singer, smooth flowing beats, high quality production, and easily understandable lyrics? I tried to translate literally and, to some extent, minimalistically given that the verse are comprised of only four syllables each. The one thing I doubtfully played with was: དད་པའི་སྐྱབས་འགྲོ which I read as དད་པས་སྐྱབས་འགྲོ  That is to say, replacing the genitive with the agentive, something commonly misspelled in songs. I also left the title as it appears listed on youtube and in the video itself. Sometimes I like the various ways Tibetans paraphrase the titles in English. There you have it - enjoy!

Note: There is another version of this song (see above) sung by a woman from Amdo named Lhakar Dolma, alternatively titled "Gathering Together". The lyrics are almost exactly the same (with only one very minor difference that I noticed). There are many other Tibetan songs with multiple versions out there, but I believe that this is the first. I am fairly sure that the Sogshoe Dargye is the original artist though. On a final note, this is a good opportunity for those curious to note the stark differences in pronunciation between an Amdowa (Lhakar Dolma) and someone who speaks more of a Central Tibetan dialect (Sogshoe Dargye--although it should also be noted that he is a singer in exile). This is one of my all-time favorites, enjoy!
