Song: My Father-Land

Singer: Kelsang Metok

Kang kar shel gyi chok pa pang gyen me tok la ye
Jig ten dzey pay gyen di pang gyen me tok la ye
Nga yi pha yul yin song pha yul yin song

Towards the crystalline snow mountains, a blossom ornamenting the meadows
It is placed between the sun and moon, may good fortune flourish!
This beautiful ornament of the world, a blossom ornamenting the meadows
Is my father-land, father-land

Nub chok tho po dza ney pang gyen me tok la ye
Kha tak kar po dar sa pang gyen mey tok la ye
Nga yi pha yul yin song pha yul yin song

From the clay earth high-up in the west, a blossom ornamenting the meadows
The Machu and Drichu rivers flow, may good fortune flourish!
Where the white scarfs abound, a blossom ornamenting the meadows
Is my father-land, father-land

Nor luk nyi ma trö ney pang gyen me tok la ye
Shön yak gyi bhu mo trung sa
Kel wa yar dro la ye
Nyin ring po nam la drang song pang gyen me tok la ye
Nga yi pha yul yin song pha yul yin song

The yak and sheep amidst the sun, a blossom ornamenting the meadows
Where wonderful young girls are born
May good fortune flourish!
Long summer days are carried off  into the heavens, a blossom ornamenting the meadows
It is my father-land, father-land

Kya chu la nyi may phab song kel wa yar dro la ye
De kyi dar thak ring sa pang gyen me tok la ye
Nga yi pha yul yin song pha yul yin song

A place of beauty during childhood, the father-land, a blossom ornamenting the meadows
The sun descends into the white water, may good fortune flourish!
The far-off land where happiness prevails, a blossom ornamenting the meadows
Is my father-land, father-land

De kyi dar thak ring sa pang gyen me tok la ye
Nga yi pha yul yin song pha yul yin song

The far-off land where happiness prevails, a blossom ornamenting the meadows
Is my father-land, father-land

Ngay lü phung ni tsöl way

Lo day ka tsheg nyang ney
Dren gi kyang pa dren yong

Those who granted me my body,
My kind father and mother,
Experienced difficulties for years and months,
I will remember that you cared for me with your kindness.

Dren dung mi lam nang na
Dzum kar ten ney shuk yö

Like my own sun and moon,
My parents reside far away, and yet,
In dreams of tender longing,
Their white smile remains.

Dren dung mi lam nang na
Dzum kar ten ney shuk yö

Dzum kar ten ney shuk yö

In dreams of tender longing,
Their white smile remains.
In dreams of tender longing,
Their white smile remains.

Ngay mi tshey yi drön mey
Nying gi ge gen dam pa
Khye kyi shel sung drön mo
Na war lhang lhang drak yong

The light of my life,
My beloved and remarkable teacher,
The gentle warmth of your speech
Clearly resounds in my ears.

Ngay ge gen gyi ka drin
Yang yang nying la chang ney

Khye kyi dzey jey dren yong

Bearing in mind again and again
The kindness of my teacher,
You who created the wonderful path ahead,
I remember your achievements.

Dun lam sang po trun pay

Where the white eagle flaunts his wings
Is my birthplace, the child of the snow's father-land

Line up individually in a nice formation!

Note: I know I say this a lot, but this is one of my favorites! The singers have amazing traditional-style voices, and seeing all of the Khampas performing in unison to modern-style music is breathtaking for me. Ascertaining the meaning of the song was a bit of a challenge, traditional songs usually are not entirely clear--at least to me. Yet, this song is clearly meant to be sung and danced to, not for reflecting on the meaning. So perhaps it is best not to focus too much on my awful translation, and instead get up to sing and dance along with this joyful tune!

"Consuming Life" by Lhalungtso

Song: Consuming Life

Singer: Hortsang Lhalungtso

Rang wang shi dey leng way mi rig tsho
Dra nyam thob thang sem chen kün la gö
Chig sha chig gi sa way söl gyün dey
Drang den ney lug den nam sam lö jö

People who speak of freedom and peace
All beings need equality and rights
The custom of eating each others' flesh
Consider whether it possesses the principles of truth and honesty

Rang gi tshey sok chey shing phang pa tar
Shen gi tshey sok rang dang chig tshung yin
Dey na nyam chung dü drö chey pay sok
Yö tshey sa war rung ngam mi bhu tsho

Just like you consider your own life to be dear and valuable
The lives of others are the same as your own
Thus, considering the life that is precious for these innocent creatures
Would it be alright to consume all they have?

Ah ha ha
Om mani pedme hung
Ah ha ha
Om mani pedme hung

Mar nag thrak tsho khöl may she ra na
Nyam chung drin chen ma lö chey pay sok
Sön ke dri yi chey pay na suk gi
Duk gi me ngag dön pa sö nü sam

In the slaughterhouse, in an ocean of boiling deep-red blood
The life which is so precious for these kind and innocent mothers
Is cut-off at their necks by a blade
Could you endure the wails of suffering caused by such pain?

Di ni nyam chung dü drö drin tshab yin
Di ni nam dak sem kyi den tam yin
Di ni lhak sam tsang may bö kül yin
Di ni tshey mey shi dey lam tön yin

This is speaking-up for the innocent creatures
This is the truth of a pure-heart
This is an urgent cry for pure intentions
This is what shows the way for peace and non-violence

Ah ha ha
Om mani pedme hung
Ah ha ha
Om mani pedme hung

Note: This is just a really beautiful song that touched me deeply and so I am grateful to be able to share my translation with everyone. There is a partial translation of the first couple of verses already available on the video's Youtube page but I wanted to create a complete version so that others could appreciate the song in its entirety, as it is very moving and powerful. Translating the title of this song was interesting, because it literally says "The Food of Life" with ཚེ་སྲོག་ (tshey sok) meaning 'life' or more literally 'life-force/vitality"; but translating it literally in English would not convey the meaning so well, which is clearly about the act of eating living beings, which is why I went with "Consuming Life" as a much more appropriate rendering of the title. I hope that my translation of this song conveys the original meaning and feel of the Tibetan lyrics, which, again, I found so deeply moving.
