Note: This song represents something that I really appreciate about modern Tibetan artists, because it is an honest plea to their own people--especially the youth--not to lose sight of the importance of their culture and heritage. On top of that, the two singers are great and so is the music. As far as the translation is concerned, this song is pretty straight-forward and easy to understand. One of the interesting phrases I came across was རྒྱུད་ལ་ལྷུན་གྱིས་གྲུབ་དགོས།། "rgyud la lhun gyis grub dgos" which literally means "It must be spontaneously accomplished in the mind", but I translated it as " [It] Must be actualized in their mind". I feel the latter captures the former's meaning and sounds much more appropriate in English. This is intimately connected, of course, with the former phrase མི་ཡི་ནུས་པ་ "mi yi nus pa" which could be translated in several ways: human energy, human power, human ability, etc. I chose "human potential" because I thought it sounded most eloquent in English, but obviously the sense of it being a "power" or "energy" is meant to be considered when it is mentioned that the best way to tap into this nus pa is from within oneself, and not just from food. Another very interesting phrase is ཡ་མ་ཟུང་གི་རྒྱུད་པ།། "ya ma zung gi rgyud pa" which I translated as "A disproportionate people." According to my dictionary, ya ma zung can mean incompatible, contrary, dissimilar, without proportion etc., and rgyud pa is here simply referring to a lineage, race, or family. When you combine this phrase with the rest of the verse, it seems to be calling for some kind of an egalitarian society, where no one is excessively wealthier than others. It even goes so far as to suggest that excess "disproportion" could threaten the very independence that Tibetans are seeking. This is the first time I have noticed a phrasing like this in a Tibetan song, so it is quite thought-provoking. འདུལ་བཞག

Notes:
We have a great song brought to us here by Sherab today. It's such an excellent tune for several reasons. First, if the melodious flute-whistle does not get you, then the way Amchok Phuljung sings and performs with such joyful enthusiasm certainly will. On top of that, the lyrics are rather, well...daring and blunt, not to mention very well composed (at least in the opinion of this Inji who lacks any sensibilities when it comes to Tibetan composition). If you compare the translation with the original, you will notice that Sherab did a great job translating this one. There are many instances where one might be tempted to try to maintain a more literal translation in fear of glossing the lyrics. However, with this song in particular, it seems as though this could end up making it sound heavy and convoluted. On the other hand, Sherab made a very smooth translation here without losing any meaning. Great job!

Notes: This nice little song encouraging Tibetans to maintain their traditional ways is relatively straightforward. ནང་དམེ་ was a new one for me. It literally means "to feud." I thought to translate it as don't fight amongst yourselves since "feud" brings some funny connotations to mind but in the end left it as such. I wasn't sure how to translate རྒྱ་ཡུལ་. It literally means 'Chinese lands', which pretty much means China. I left it like this until my friend suggested mainland China. I opted for this since it is, after all, a modern song located in the context of a modern situation. Additionally 'Chinese lands' sounds like lands occupied by Han Chinese, which could mean places like Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc. which is a world of difference from the PRC for Tibetans. The line རྒྱ་གླུ་དགའ་སྣང་མ་སྐྱེ།། literally means something like 'don't give rise to joyful expressions Chinese songs." I glossed this as "don't enjoy Chinese songs." Another doubt I had was in regards to the last line. It's not so clear as to whether Lobsang Dawa wants Tibetans to sing his song of solidarity or just any old song of loyalty. I figured it sounds nice if he encourages other people to join him in signing along so I left it as "this song."
