'Melody of Memories' by Mindrol Lhamo

A Melody of Memories

Lyrics: Min from U
Singer: Mindrol Lhamo

Sitting high above this world; the lamp of my heart
Not the sun, not the moon; my master, my root guru
You alone dispell the darkness within
Oh, great vanquisher of the ignorance of beings,
You alone are the eyes of this world!
Oh, I pray!
Oh, Great wish-fullfilling jewel!
Oh! Look upon us with your great compassion!
As heirs to your lineage
As heirs to your lineage
You are always in our hearts.

Unparalleled in this humanly realm; my gracious mother.
Not a goddess, not a nagini; the kindest of all, my mother.
You alone have given me all there is in this life
Oh, benevolent matron!
You alone are my heart’s support
Oh! I rememeber your great kindness
Oh, my most kind mother,
With your pure heart glowing
I am your dear child
I am your dear child
You are always in my heart
I am your dear child
I am your dear child
You are always in my heart

Notes:

A beautiful song by one of our favorite singer-heroines, Mindrol Lhamo, about her kind root guru (Khenchen Jigme Phuntsok) and her dear mother. Really mellow and touching ... please enjoy!

This world, samsara,
Is like the tip of a needle -
Moments of happiness
Are like a setting sun.
The essence of dharma is the bodhisattva -
If one is kindhearted, one's path and surroundings are also kind.
The essence of dharma is the bodhisattva -
If one is kindhearted, one's path and surroundings are also kind.

Better to sing a little tune with a kind heart
Than count manis with a wicked one.
The essence of dharma is the bodhisattva -
If one is kindhearted, one's path and surroundings are also kind.

Notes
: Here we have a very beautiful folk song about being kindhearted offset with a rather intense rap breakdown (most likely performed by her brother). But what could exemplify modern Tibetan music more than that! There was one major difficult with the translation of this folk song. That was the "ཅུང་ཟད་ཉི་མ་འདྲ" which literally means "like a little bit of sun" - something the happiness in samsara is supposed to be like. Since the literal translation is not so clear as to what it means, I decided to translate it as "like the setting sun." I felt this fit well with samsara being like a needle since the happiness is minimal and followed by suffering. Another slightly problematic bit was ས་དང་ལམ. This could mean two things; in a dharmic context this would mean "the bhumis and the paths" or in a more general sense it would simply means "places and paths." I opted for the latter given its a folk song and adjusted "places" to "surroundings." Another discrepancy I came across was the difference between  བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའ and བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་པ which both occur in the song. Initially I thought the first referred to bodhisattvas while the second referred to bodhicitta. However, my teacher later explained that they are two different spellings for bodhisattva. He said there is actually something of a small debate around this based on the it being a translation from Sanskrit.
I hope you enjoy this song as well as the interlude! As always, any feedback is more than welcome.
