Chug dang kar nag sha shey leg po tsho

I have a single dear friend, my sling
Whom I must travel all across the vast plains with
You and I, we go together and we stay together
Looking after healthy livestock with coats both black and white

Khyö dang nga nyi nyam dro nyam dö jey
Kyi dang lu yang tsa thang teng du khyab

I have a single dear friend, my flute
Whom I must travel all across the vast plains with
You and I, we go together and we stay together
Resounding a joyful melody across the plains

Nga la ga way rok chig chung dri yö

Khyö dang nga nyi nyam dro nyam dö jey

'Perfecting the Flowers of Auspicious Words' by Chodrak and Garcho

Perfecting the Flowers of Auspicious Words

Lyrics: Tsultrim Tendzin
Melody: Traditional
Singers: Chodrak and Garcho

In the land of the snowy mountains, Tibet,
The sublime Three Jewels are glorified higher than the sky.
Barbarous enemies of the teachings gather.
May the sun of joy and happiness arise.
May the sun of joy and happiness arise.

A single family, brothers and sisters,
Oh world, hold affectionate hands, join together tightly!
Throw inner strife and quarrels far away!
May there be the auspicious attainment of peace and security.
May there be the auspicious attainment of peace and security.

Oh protector of the snowy mountains, lord of refuge,
Come to the Jewel Land of Lhasa,
Turn the wheel of the sacred teachings;
May the wishes of the Tibetan people be spontaneously accomplished.
May the wishes of the Tibetan people be spontaneously accomplished.

Seek after the Three Jewels, the ultimate objects of attainment.
Train in the knowledge of the times.
Dedicate the fruits of virtue for mother-like beings.
May this auspicious prayer of aspiration be accomplished.
May this auspicious prayer of aspiration be accomplished.

Notes:

This is a very inspiring song with a strong beat brought to us in translation by Sherab. It's one of my favorites so please enjoy!

Yeeea.... Ley-si
Let's go, let's go - back in the direction of our homeland

Notes:

Here is a really pleasant tune singing praises of the Minyak region in Kham. I got a chance to spend a few days in this area visiting a friend last summer and thus wanted to translate this song as a sort of homage. Not only that but it is just simply an outright joyful little song. The primary difficulty in translating this one was the This seems easy enough but I was really at a lost for how to translate the གཅིག and  གཉིས. There seem to be a lot of workable possibilities. This is also something that comes up in a large number of songs, yet I haven't found a systematic way to translate it. First I thought that it perhaps resembled English songs ("Microphone check one two one two..."). I discussed this issue with Sherab several times and he suggested that it could be "one after another." This seems to make sense and this is how I left it in this song. Anyways, I wish you pleasurable listenings to mellow melodies of Minyak.

This world, samsara,
Is like the tip of a needle -
Moments of happiness
Are like a setting sun.
The essence of dharma is the bodhisattva -
If one is kindhearted, one's path and surroundings are also kind.
The essence of dharma is the bodhisattva -
If one is kindhearted, one's path and surroundings are also kind.

Better to sing a little tune with a kind heart
Than count manis with a wicked one.
The essence of dharma is the bodhisattva -
If one is kindhearted, one's path and surroundings are also kind.

The essence of dharma is bodhicitta -
If one is kindhearted, one's path and surroundings are also kind.

Notes
: Here we have a very beautiful folk song about being kindhearted offset with a rather intense rap breakdown (most likely performed by her brother). But what could exemplify modern Tibetan music more than that! There was one major difficult with the translation of this folk song. That was the "ཅུང་ཟད་ཉི་མ་འདྲ" which literally means "like a little bit of sun" - something the happiness in samsara is supposed to be like. Since the literal translation is not so clear as to what it means, I decided to translate it as "like the setting sun." I felt this fit well with samsara being like a needle since the happiness is minimal and followed by suffering. Another slightly problematic bit was ས་དང་ལམ. This could mean two things; in a dharmic context this would mean "the bhumis and the paths" or in a more general sense it would simply means "places and paths." I opted for the latter given its a folk song and adjusted "places" to "surroundings." Another discrepancy I came across was the difference between  བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའ and བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་པ which both occur in the song. Initially I thought the first referred to bodhisattvas while the second referred to bodhicitta. However, my teacher later explained that they are two different spellings for bodhisattva. He said there is actually something of a small debate around this based on the it being a translation from Sanskrit.
I hope you enjoy this song as well as the interlude! As always, any feedback is more than welcome.
