[There are] Drikung masters who open our eyes to the purity of the world and its inhabitants

[1] The fifth buddha is said to be Maitreya, the future buddha as predicted by buddha Shakyamuni. Therefore, this line of praise is placing the Seventeenth Karmapa in a similar position to Maitreya and the buddhas that appear before him.

[2] This is an epithet for Avalokitesvara, of whom the Karmapas are said to be an emanation of.

Note:

I would have never thought to translate bstod glu as ‘a tribute song’ (I would’ve initially gone for ‘a song of praise’) but that is really what we really do often say in English. That is why I love the titles and translations (made by Tibetans I assume) that appear in the videos themselves. The first words of the song phyi sa literally means ‘shit and piss.’ I wanted to translated it as ‘shitty/crappy lands’ but reframed and went with ‘filthy.’ Sherab gave me lots of other great songs by Wanggyal from his album Music of the Scent Eaters (another great translation) – check them out!
