Song: Where I Mourn Is In a Distant Land
གཞས་པ། ཤེར་བསྟན༎
Singer: Sherten
ང་བུ་ཆུང་སྐྱོ་ས་ས་མཐའ་རེད༎
Nga bhu chung kyo sa san tha rey
དགུང་ཉི་མ་ཤར་ཕྱོགས་སྤྲིན་གྱིས་སྒྲིབ༎
Gung nyi ma shar chok drin gyi drib
ཐོག་སེ་ར་ནམ་ཡོང་ཆ་མེད་རེད༎
Thok se ra nam yong cha mey rey
སེམས་སྐྱོ་བའི་གླུ་ཆུང་རྒྱང་ནས་ལེན༎
Sem kyo way lu chung gyang ney len
Where I mourn is in a distant land.
The mid-day sun is obscured by clouds from the
east.
The hail and thunder could come at anytime.
I sing this small song of mourning from the distance.
ང་བུ་ཆུང་ས་མཐའི་ཡུལ་ན་ཡོད༎
Nga bhu chung san thay yül na yö
གངས་དཀར་པོའི་དབུ་རྩེ་སྨུག་པས་བཟུང༎
Kang kar pö u tse muk pey sung
བཙག་བསེར་བུ་ནམ་ཡོང་ཆ་མེད་རེད༎
Tsak ser bu nam yong cha mey rey
སེམས་སྐྱོ་བའི་མིག་ཆུ་ཡིད་ན་ལྷུང༎
Sem kyo way mig chu yi na lhung
I, a small boy, am in this distant land.
I lay hold of the white snowy peaks through the
fog.
The cold winds could come at any time.
In my mind, I shed tears of mourning.
ང་བུ་ཆུང་འདུག་ས་མི་ཡུལ་རེད༎
Nga bhu chung duk sa mi yül rey
མཚོ་ལྗང་ལོའི་ཞལ་རས་འཁྱག་གིས་བསྡམས༎
Tsho jang lö shel rey khyak gi dam
ཁ་བ་བུ་ཡུག་ནམ་ཡོང་ཆ་མེད་རེད༎
Kha wa bhu yuk nam yong cha mey rey
ཡིད་སྐྱོ་བའི་འབོད་པ་གླུ་རུ་ཤོར༎
Yi kyo way bö pa lu ru shor
My presence is within this familiar land.
I am enveloped by the frigid presence of forests
and lakes.
The snows and blizzards could come at any time.
I lose control and cry out this song of
mourning.
ང་བུ་ཆུང་སྐྱོ་ས་ས་མཐའ་རེད༎
Nga bhu chung kyo sa san tha rey
དགུང་ཉི་མ་ཤར་ཕྱོགས་སྤྲིན་གྱིས་སྒྲིབ༎
Gung nyi ma shar chok drin gi drib
ཐོག་སེ་ར་ནམ་ཡོང་ཆ་མེད་རེད༎
Thok se ra nam yong cha mey rey
སེམས་སྐྱོ་བའི་གླུ་ཆུང་རྒྱང་ནས་ལེན༎

Note: One interesting phrase that appears in this song actually appears in many songs with male vocalists, where they refer to themselves with the phrase ང་བུ་ཆུང་ "nga bu chung" which means "I the small boy" and is usually meant to be humilific. In this song, however, it also seems to add a pungent sense that the speaker is acknowledging his own insignificance in the face of the elements--which could likely be a metaphor for something else. Although the phrase is repeated in the first line of each verse (indeed, it is in the title as well), I only translated it once where it seemed to fit best in the song. This phrase is usually quite difficult to fit into English without it sounding too forced, especially when singers go with the more succinct version "bu nga" lit. "Boy I/me"
